The following morning, I found myself at the Brent Valley golf club. The day of my golf lesson had arrived. The one I’d used as bartering material to convince Victor to come for therapy. Only now did it occur to me I should have asked Roger to come along, but after telling him to stay away, it would have been an odd thing to do. Besides, I was hoping some good would come from being outside engaged in an activity, that maybe Victor would open up a bit more, tell me something useful. What I didn’t count on was a rare but bona fide thunderstorm threatening to ruin things.

Victor and I stood inside the half-way house, looking out over Par One. The immaculate grass lines on the fairway were losing definition in the blue-gray darkness of the impending storm. There were a few other golfers in the clubhouse with us, having just finished a round, drinking and chatting. No one was aiming to go outside. No one but us.

That this was my idea was so incredibly ironic, it nearly killed me. Playing golf was bad enough. Playing it with a client in a thunderstorm was downright diabolical.

“Victor, it’s not looking great out there, is it?”

His eyes were hard as he looked out, and he didn’t turn his head when he said, “Looks fine to me. Just a bit of wind and rain.”

“Don’t forget the thunder and lightning,” I said, and gave a half-laugh to show I was not in any way petrified of playing this silly game out in a storm.

In response, Victor pulled his golf bag trolley through the door. I didn’t follow right away, so he turned around.

“You coming?” he challenged. I couldn’t say I cared much for the mood he seemed to be in.

I briefly considered refusing. Did I really care whether these people lived or died? Did I have to play along to this extent? Yes, and yes continued to be the answer. For now, I needed to keep this man coming into my practice, for both his and Janet’s sake.

We set out to the first tee-off. The last time we’d played, we were in a group. The safety of a group, I should say. This time, it was apparent from the start that this would be a very different experience. Victor was quiet as he placed his ball on the tee, selecting a driver and standing over the ball. There were no customary practice swings. He drew back and swung; the ball disappearing into the darkening sky ahead of us. I don’t think he even looked to see where it landed, but grunted in satisfaction before announcing, “You’re up.”

“I know, there’re only two of us,” I smirked, but he either didn’t hear me or didn’t find me funny. He avoided my eyes as I walked past him to place my ball on the tee. I pulled my driver from the golf bag and placed it on the ground, spread my feet apart, and took a practice swing.
